The term "self" is used in many different ways by different people. For the purposes of clarity of communication it's important to always figure out in what way the term is being used, otherwise there will inevitably be miscommunication, misunderstanding, etc.
Possible Meanings
The uses are, generally:
- "self" with a small "s". This generally refers to the ego.
- It can also refer to aspects of or the entirety of one's social identity - a social role of who one feels oneself to be (e.g. a wife, husband, employee, father, brother).
- "Self" with a big "S". This generally refers to the soul.
